Influence of slavery on the development of American society

From your text, "From 1790 to 1860, cotton production increased more than a thousandfold, thanks in part to the development of the cotton gin. Using slave labor, the South raised millions of bales of cotton for New England textile mills and the American Northeast."

Could we argue that the early American institution of Slavery was instrumental in the development and progression of the Industrial revolution as well as the growth and creation of the early American Identity? What can you point too in the development of 1800's American lifestyles and culture that is either directly or marginally related to slavery?
